"In 1835, a London physician named Nathaniel Bagshaw Ward sealed a fern inside a glass case and watched it thrive — without water, without care, for years. His accidental discovery revolutionized plant science and sent live greenery around the globe."

We build on that same principle. Every Wardian terrarium is a sealed, self-sustaining ecosystem — a miniature world that recycles its own moisture, feeds its own soil, and sustains itself indefinitely. Put it on your desk, forget about it, and watch it flourish anyway.

Three worlds.
One glass case.

Each terrarium is handcrafted to order. Choose your ecosystem type or let us decide based on your space.

Moss Garden

Layered woodland moss on a bed of charcoal and stone. Deep greens, soft textures, perpetual growth. The most low-maintenance option — essentially zero care.

Self-sustaining Zero watering From $120

Jungle World

Tropical ferns, selaginella, and miniature foliage sealed inside. A living, breathing ecosystem with visible condensation cycles and slow, graceful growth.

Closed system Visible humidity From $180

Desert Microclimate

Succulents, stonecrop, and air plants in an open or semi-open vessel. Loves direct light, demands almost nothing, looks stunning year-round.

Open vessel Full sun OK From $140

How it works

01

We build it by hand

Each terrarium is assembled in our workshop — glass vessels cleaned, layers of gravel and charcoal placed, soil profiled, plants positioned. No two are identical.

02

It seals itself

Once closed, a closed terrarium creates its own water cycle. Moisture transpires from the soil, condenses on the glass walls, drips back down. It's the same principle Nathaniel Ward discovered in 1835.

03

It thrives without you

Place it on a desk, shelf, or bedside table with indirect light. Leave it alone. Check on it occasionally. Watch the moss grow and the condensation cycle. That's the whole job.

Materials cost us as little as $25. We charge $120–$280. Premium materials, handcraft, and free shipping included.

1842

The case that moved the plant kingdom.

Before the Wardian case, shipping live plants across oceans was nearly impossible. The London physician Nathaniel Bagshaw Ward changed that — and in doing so, moved bananas, rubber, and quinine around the world, reshaping global trade and botany forever.

We call our company Wardian because we build the same thing he invented: a sealed glass case where plants thrive without intervention. We just do it with better design and ship it to your door.
